Lessons From the VA Behavioral Health Autopsy Program

Veterans and Service Members die by suicide at an alarming rate in the United States.

Recognizing that we have a lot to learn about those who die by suicide, the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs developed the Behavioral Health Autopsy Program (BHAP) in 2012. The program aims to to learn more about the context and circumstances that preceded a Veterans' Death by suicide. BHAP provides a comprehensive model for understanding suicide death, including reviews of records, family interviews, and other information sources. This information is used to sharpen and improve suicide prevention for Veterans throughout the U.S.

In this webinar, Dr. Stephanie Gamble, the Director of BHAP, will explain more about BHAP and the ways it has shaped suicide prevention for Veterans. Dr. Gamble will also discuss the methodological lessons learned from BHAP and how local RFA practitioners and others, like fatality review boards, can learn from BHAP and integrate best practices into their own work.

This webinar takes place from 12:00-1:00 PM EDT.
